The Trade Deadline was last Friday, July 30th and it was absolute chaos for the Dodgers farm system. The Dodgers were part of the biggest trade of the deadline and one other trade that netted another major leaguer. There were also some promotions, demotions, and waiver claims.
Traded
To The Nationals
The Dodgers received the top pitcher and top positions player of the Trade Deadline season. In order to receive future Hall of Famer, Max Scherzer, and All-Star Shortstop, Trea Turner the Dodgers gave up some excellent prospects in Keibert Ruiz, Josiah Gray, Gerardo Carrillo, and Donovan Casey. Ruiz and Gray were the top 2 prospects in the Dodgers system and Carrillo was a mid-level ranked prospect who has an electric arm. We also wrote about Casey over a year ago and how he was a bit unheralded but worth keeping an eye on.
To The Royals
The Dodgers acquired starting pitcher Danny Duffy from the Royals for a player to be named later. There is speculation that the player quality will be based on how much Duffy can pitch from the Dodgers as he is on the Injured List.
Waivers and Promotions
- Catcher Chad Wallach, son of former Dodger, Tim Wallach, was claimed off of waivers from the Marlins. He fills the role as the third catcher on the 40-man roster with the trade of Ruiz.
- DJ Peters was DFA’d (Designated For Assignment) with the Duffy trade and was claimed by the Texas Rangers. It was great to see Peters get a chance to play for the Dodgers.
- Yefry Ramirez was added to the 40-man roster and made his Dodger debut on Sunday with two innings of shutout ball. He was rewarded with a demotion back to Triple-A on Monday.
- Pitchers Aldry Acosta and Hyun-il Choi were promoted to High-A from the Quakes Low-A team.
- Pitchers Landon Knack, Jose Martinez, and Cameron Gibbens (who has been covered extensively by us) were promoted to Double-A Tulsa from High-A along with first baseman Justin Yurchak.
- The biggest news was that Ryan Pepiot and Andre Jackson got one step closer to the Major Leagues with their promotion to Triple-A. Don’t be surprised to see one or both of them in Los Angeles soon.
- Late update: Shortstop Eddys Leonard was promoted to Great Lakes, High-A.
Who Is Next
The next guys promoted should include Jorbit Vivas, Carlos Duran, and Diego Cartaya. if you have a chance, get out to Rancho Cucamonga soon before they get sent to Great Lakes.

Tim thanks for the information. I am a big fan of Miguel Vargas. Why is Hoese rated higher than Vargas in the MLB Pipeline? Vargas is younger and has better contact skills. Vargas was moved up to Tulsa earlier and after an adjustment is hitting well. There is a lot of hype for Hoese. But why not Vargas with his size, pedigree, and bat on ball skills plus he is a right-handed bat I would think he might fill 3rd base in two years when Turner’s contract runs out. I do believe there will be a bitter strike next year. I wonder how much of the year is played. I also believe Seager will leave to play for an East Coast team closer to his and his wife’s home in NC. DH after the 2022 Labor agreement would give the Dodgers some latitude with Turner. Rios might be back and he was impressive, Sorry for the long comment.
Thanks
MLB Pipeline will be doing a mid-season update soon. I believe Hoese will drop down quite a bit. Vargas is one of my favorite prospects.
